Kevin Kline, born Kevin Delaney Kline on October 24th 1947 is an American film and stage actor best recognised for his roles in such movies as ‘A fish called Wanda’ and ‘De lovely’.
Kline was born and raised in St Louis, Missouri. His Father owned a large record and toy store called ‘The record bar’. In 1970 Kline attended the drama division of the Julliard School in New York. He formed the ‘City Centre Acting Company’ in 1972 alongside Patti Lupone and David Ogden Stiers. They travelled around the US and performed several Shakespeare plays and various other works.
Kevin left the acting company in 1976 and went on to have several theatre roles including the role of "Bruce Granit", a matinée idol caricature, in Hal Prince's On The Twentieth Century for which he won his first prestigious ‘Tony Award’, another was soon to come when he starred in ‘The pirates of Penzance’ in 1981.
Kevin’s film career took off in the 1980’s when he starred in a series of movies including The Big Chill, Silverado, Grand Canyon, I Love You To Death, and French Kiss. All of which were by director Lawrence Kasdan.
In 1989 he starred in one of his memorable films ‘A fish called Wanda’ alongside John Cleese. For this role he took home an Academy Award for best supporting actor.
Kevin Kline is married to actress Phoebe Cates, the couple live in New York City and have two children together. Since his son was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes Kline has been an active supporter of ‘The juvenile diabetes research foundation’
Kevin is well known for having turned down several major film roles and tends to stick to lower budget productions and plays that he has a genuine interest in. It would be nice to see him back on the big screen sometime in the near future.
